Labor Support

Meet the Doulas

Get to know us and learn more about how we can help at your birth. Our next meeting:  March 21st ~ Please RSVP! Now accepting clients with estimated due dates of June 22nd and beyond.

Why have a doula at your birth?
Doulas continue to be recognized for the positive effects they have on laboring women, their partners and their babies. Births attended by doulas generally have a reduction in medical intervention and improved birth outcomes.

Having a doula:

cuts in half the odds of having an unnecessary cesarean
reduces the rate of forcep or vacuum-assisted delivery
shortens labor by reducing stress, discomfort & anxiety
               reduces the use of pitocin
               reduces requests for pain medication
increases positive feelings about the birthing experience

“The evidence in favor of doulas comes from more than eleven carefully designed studies: Quite simply, hiring one cuts in half the odds of having a forceps or vacuum-extractor delivery. Having a doula also shortens labor by greatly reducing stress, pain, and anxiety. “
~Ina May Gaskin

What can a Birth Journeys Doula do for you?
Our goal is to support families in having more satisfying birth experiences. We provide continuous support to the mom and as needed support to the whole birth team. Often the doula is the only person present for the whole labor experience, other than the partner.

It is now widely recognized that adding a labor support person (doula) to your birth circle can yield many positive benefits. As childbirth educators, we know that knowledge is power and we help empower birthing families to make informed choices during their birth.

Our role during labor is to:
·      Provide continuous support throughout the entire labor and birth process.
·      Support the decisions you make about your birth.
·      Suggest positions, comfort measures, and techniques to help the progress of labor.
·      Answer questions or help you get your questions answered.
·      Provide emotional support and encouragement to you and your partner.
·      Help your partner take as active a role as desired in supporting you.

We will not:
·      Take the place of your partner.
·      Perform clinical tasks such as; blood pressure, check fetal heart tones or vaginal exams.
·      Make decisions for you.
·      Communicate decisions on your behalf to the medical staff - you or your partner will speak on your own behalf to the clinical staff.

It is our hope that you will feel fully supported as you meet the unique challenges of your labor, and that your birth will be a positive experience during which you feel confident, informed, and surrounded by care, love and respect.

Back-up services...
L to R, Sarah & Rachel
In the event of a long labor (lasting more than 24 hours), we may call in each other as back-up. After a short respite, your doula will resume her role. This is to ensure you get the best support possible. In the unlikely event that neither of us can attend you in labor, we rely on Mother Rising Childbirth Services. We love and trust Rachel and Sarah and would want them to be our doulas!

Reimbursement…
If more women apply for reimbursement, insurance companies may consider adding labor support to their coverage list. Please ask us for paperwork to assist you in your efforts to be reimbursed by your insurance company.
Currently, many Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) will allow for either direct payment or reimbursement for our services, please check with your company.
Birth Journeys childbirth ed clients receive a $50 discount on labor support services.

Every birth is a unique and powerful journey.  We believe that all laboring women benefit from a caring, compassionate and knowledgeable support team who trust in the birth process.  We believe that the birth of a baby is the birth of a family and that every family should be able to reflect on their birth as a positive experience.

The moment a baby is born is joyous, magical and wondrous. We are honored to have the opportunity to share this time with you.
